English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.
The English Faculty at Warrawong High School pride themselves in nurturing the development of students ability to understand and use language effectively, appreciate, reflect on and enjoy the English language. Through fostering lifelong learners students use critical, creative, collaborative and communication skills to make meaning in ways that are imaginative, interpretive, analytical and powerful.
Our aim is to foster a love of the incredible range of texts available to young people in the 21st century through the study of both canonical and current literature in the forms of Prose, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Film and Drama. Through this students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.
An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development and we nurture student’s development as articulate young adults ready for the world beyond their schooling.
By engaging students as high order thinkers, we encourage students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.
In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:
· English Advanced
· English as an Alternative Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
· English Extension 1
· English Extension 2
· English Standard
· English Studies.
At Warrawong High School, the English faculty offers a range of extra-curricular opportunities for their students. Our Writer’s Club celebrates imaginative writing and supports student collaboration in the writing process. We also enhance our student’s learning opportunities through our collaboration with the Port Kembla Youth Project and Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra to complete a magazine project.
