NSW schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics.
Approved providers deliver these, where available.
Christian Special Religious Education classes (known as SRE or Scripture) involve open discussion and interactive learning based on the authorised curriculum (Think Faith). The goal of these classes is to provide students with opportunities to explore the bigger questions of life and gain a basic understanding of Christian beliefs and study contemporary issues related to the Christian faith. Students will also develop the critical literacy skills required to make informed decisions about the Christian faith for themselves. Local Christian Churches employ a teacher at the school to teach Christian (Combined Churches) SRE in classes fortnightly for students in Years 7-10, and seminars each term in Years 11-12.
In the allocated time set aside for SRE, students not attending are provided with supervised alternative meaningful activities. This could include reading, private study or completing homework with their classroom teacher. Students continue the same arrangement as the previous year, unless a parent/carer has requested a change, in writing.
