STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
 

Course description:

International research indicates that 75% of the fastest growing occupations require STEM skills and knowledge.

STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The importance of STEM disciplines for the future economic and social well-being of Australia cannot be underestimated.

Students will study a variety of themed units of work and complete a range of projects utilising inquiry based learning techniques and hands-on activities. Students will be required to work collaboratively with others and produce portfolios to showcase their work. All activities will focus on the application of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to real life situations.

 

Students will have the option to participate in a variety of competitions and STEM based intervention programs during the course.

 

STEM activities may include:

  • Mechatronics (Mars Rover Challenge, Robotics, Lego Mindstorms, PLC's, Pneumatic & Hydraulic systems, etc)
  • Science and Engineering Challenge
  • Solar & electric powered vehicles
  • CO2 dragsters
  • F1inSchools
  • Aeronautical challenge
  • Civil structures, architectural design, industrial design, etc
  • RoboCUP and Robotics Challenge days
  • Excursions e.g UOW STEM days
  • Forensics, biotechnology
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM)
  • Major Research Projects

Fee: $30 for materials

iSTEM is a School Developed Board Endorsed Course which was developed by Regional Development Australia – Hunter, Maitland Grossmann High and industry partners. This means that student success is recognised on their Record of School Achievement (RoSA)
